The aim of the present research was to study subtle and blatant prejudice (Pettigrew & Meertens, 1995) towards homosexuals, referring to methods and results of a recent Italian research (Petrillo, La Barbera, Falasconi, 2003), to find possible trends in changing attitudes. The relation between intergroup contact and prejudice (blatant and subtle) was investigated too. Research’s sample consists of 388 university students (66% female; 34% male). Different from other international studies, results show an increase of both dimensions of prejudice. The growth of subtle prejudice and the decrease of coherence between the two dimensions are significant for left wing participants only. The contact shows an inverse association with both dimensions of prejudice, but particularly with the subtle one. The implications with relevant issues are discussed, such as possible consequences of parasocial contact. Finally, we suggest some possible future developments.
