Hydropower and mini-hydropower can produce heavy environmental impacts on water bodies, thus turning away WFD environmental quality objectives. But Europe also push in order to increase renewable energy production, including hydropower. Reconciling these two issues is only possible if the local government (regions and provinces firstly) will govern and plan hydropower development through the implementation of spatial and economic policies capable of promoting hydropower development without harming the environment.
