This paper is aimed at evaluating two approaches to pragmatic presuppositions: the Common Ground account (CG) and the Propositional Context account (PC). As first step, I will claim that, according to the PC, propositional attitudes towards presuppositions are not a condition for the appropriateness of utterances containing presupposition triggers. Secondly, I will present the results of a psycholinguistic experimental design which suggests that propositional attitudes towards presuppositions have relevant effects in the cognitive process involved in appropriateness evaluation of utterances. I will conclude by claiming that the PC, in order to have a better psychological plausibility, should take into account the role of propositional attitudes by distinguishing between the condition for appropriateness of utterances and the process of appropriateness evaluation.
