In this article, Professor Cattaneo makes a plea for considering human rights as something that belongs to individual human beings, rather than to social groupings and cultures. Tracing his reasoning back to the Enlightenment and to Kant, he argues that this classical vision of rights’ deepest roots can be found in the original Christian philosophy, from Christ to St. Paul. The author stresses that human rights must have an absolute foundation and, therefore, proposes a sharp critique of current relativistic theories which, in his opinion, may present a challenge for "the value of human dignity".
