Vittorio Cappelli analyses the relationship between immigration and urbanisation through a study of the migration flows of Italians to the peripheral regions of Brazil, in Central America and the Caribbean. The comparative analysis of the Italian communities focuses on the chain migrations from a frontier area of southern Italy (between Campania, Basilicata and Calabria) that played an important role in the process of modernisation and the creation of an urban network in Latin America through their activities as merchants, artisans, industrialists and in the arts.
