The topic of this brief essay is the establishment of dumps in the Venice Laguna, considering the general problems associated with environmental conservation and con- struction of urban settlements, highlighting government strategy and business and social trends in the disposal of waste generated by public and private maintenance activities. The ensuing debate covers long-term considerations from the beginning of the sixteenth century to mid-twentieth century which alone can, at this stage of research, provide the euristic valence needed for a full understanding of the complex inter-relation of interests that came about with time on the control over a matter only apparently insignificant as mud, within a shifting process of conservation and transformation.
