"Megastructures": settlement geographies and evolving forms - High land use megastructures are specialist places, enclosed and/or built-on with highly specific functions. However, they can also be public spaces, a sequence of places used for a wide variety of purposes. The suffix ‘mega’ is a good introduction to the complex nature of these multifunctional and multimodal phenomena. Their design requires an effective combination of planning restrictions and land use with measures to improve the context in which they are set. The article discusses a densification programme for the area around the new Mediopadana high-speed train station in Reggio Emilia and the need to ensure its flexibility, multifunctionality and generalised interconnection.
