The article traces the history of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and attempts to define its role in the present capitalistic crisis. It analyses the different thematic frameworks in which CSR operates, the various aspects of production and daily life it influences, and illustrates the various empirical and methodological procedures for measuring and certifying it at an international level. The conclusion stresses the need for a greater level of social responsibility both for corporations and for citizens and consumers in their everyday life.
