Italy: civil identity and Catholic identity - The 150th anniversary of Italian unification next year coincides with a critical phase, both in society (financial and economic crisis, mass immigrant workers without civil rights) and in the state (affirmation of a plebiscitary-television right-wing regime). In this context the authorities in the Catholic church have adopted an aggressive policy on the terrain of bio-ethical questions: abortion, contraception, euthanasia. A consequence has been the emergence, in historiography as well, of questions such as "identity", the history of human rights, Church-State relations.

Keywords: Bioethics, identity, human rights, Catholic church, Italian state. Parole chiave: bioetica, identità, diritti umani, Chiesa cattolica, Stato italiano.
