the Author describes an experience of focal psychotherapeutic treatment carried out in the Psychiatric Day Hospital of Modena’s Local Health Unit. This Day Hospital treats essentially patients with eating disorders. The experience is based on a small sample of patients. It’s theoretical and clinical paradigm is "functional integration". This focal approach - developed in a setting of integrated mental health care - allows patients to be proactive, in an evolutionary psychological perspective, more so than would be patients treated with previous clinical methods. A clinical vignette illustrates the experience. The Author considers focal psychotherapeutic treatment a useful method for treating patients with eating disorders, since this approach is integrated in the comprehensive treatment plan of the patient and based on team work.
