This research aims to analyze the socio-economic context of inland Sicily taking as reference models of territorial hierarchy of contemporary economists and geographers. The author speculates that both exogenous and economic events, in part, those endogenous newer, have accentuated the territorial changes of Sicily, accelerated the process of territorial concentration, and finally consolidated a stronger territorial hierarchy based on the "dominance" of metropolitan areas compared to inland areas of the island. Method and Results The author, with the support, therefore, the main macroeconomic models of urban geography identifies the hallmarks of a process of retreat of the inland areas of Sicily and suggests an interpretive reading that takes into account both the events and trends specific to the territory, both the functioning of dynamic models that govern and determine the location of production activities, the hierarchy of urban centers, and the evolutionary processes of productive transformation. Conclusions In conclusion, the central place theory to evolutionary models more complex the author proposes a territorial system of reticular of cities and towns large and intermediate through a path of alternative development that enhances an organization of space and economies based on a relationship inside area-metropolitan area no longer founded on the "dominance" but specialization and complementarity.
