In June 1664, the first public audience of the English ambassador, Sir Richard Fanshawe, inserted novelties in the diplomatic entourage followed at the court of Madrid. Both difficulties to search lodging and the complex regulation of palatine etiquette during his public entry were his main problems. This paper focuses on the singularity of this case study to understand the European representatives’ treatment after Spanish-French incident of 1661, and the discussions about the articulation of ceremonial rules in the royal receptions from this point.
