The article deals with the topic of the reconstruction of the University of Catania in the aftermath of the second world war and during the rectorate of Cesare Sanfilippo (1950-1974). At that time the university was looking for new spaces of dialogue for its scientific research and didactic activities on an urban, national and international scale and it discussed the role played by Science in the development process of Southern Italy in the Mediterranean area.
