The theme of ageing is usually approached in one of two opposing frameworks. One emphasizes the new opportunities for freedom that open up when work no longer places constraints; the other underlines the inexorable decline which is specific to advancing age, a time that is marked by loss and when personal desires and future outcomes both become less important. Both approaches are reductive as they do not consider the social changes taking place.
