This contribution analyzes the industrial history of Naples, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, taking into consideration both the social and psychological dimension of its operators. It achieves this by comparing the evolution of the factory system with its representation in fictional narrative. Particular attention will be paid to three well-known novels: "I tre operai" by Carlo Bernari, "Donnarumma all’assalto" by Ottiero Ottieri and "La dismissione" by Ermanno Rea.

Keywords: Industrialization, working condition, social conflict, deindustrialization
