This paper investigates the role of discursive practices on the production of space and on the management of social housing districts. The reflection is based on one Italian case-study and on one American case study. The first section uses the theoretical contributions of John Langshaw Austin, Antonio Gramsci, Michel Foucault, and Henri Lefebvre to explain the causal relationship between discursive practices and public policies. The second section dwells on the causal relationship between media and academic discourses and physical space production in the two case studies. The conclusive section argues in favor of breaking the transmission chain between public policies for social housing districts and mainstream discursive practices, and of re-basing such policies on accurate socioanthropological descriptions of the neighborhoods.
