This article aims to provide some background thinking about the current family legal practices of foreigners living in France, as well as how they are treated by the French legal system. On the basis of empirical investigations conducted with Mo-roccan and Vietnamese families, the author examines some cases of the co-existence of different legal systems and/or transfers of laws, from the standpoint of legal pluralism. She also shows how immigrants make use of law, with more or less awareness of their place in the midst of diverse normative systems, and how French judges usually react to such behaviour, before coming to some theoretical conclusions about the question of cultural integration.
