Whilst Italy has pioneered the introduction of the 3+2 (BA+MA, BSc+MSc, LLB+LLM) model of higher education, as agreed upon by the European Ministers of Education on several occasions, such as the Sorbonne, Bologna and Prague Dec-larations, the corresponding reform law that has now been in force in the country for less than one year has already been met by strong waves of criticism. This criti-cism seems particularly vehement among some milieus of legal scholarship, which advocate a return to the unitary four-year curriculum of legal studies. Though ac-knowledging that the general framework of the reform is exceedingly rigid and bu-reaucratic, this article counters some of the more recurrent critiques advanced against it in the context of legal education. In the author’s view, most of the prob-lems raised could be solved quite easily on the basis of the existing law, or amend-ing it marginally, whereas other and more serious problems, stemming from the ambiguous attitude of the present Italian government vis-à-vis law schools and the legal professions as a whole, seem still to be suffering undue neglect and deserve the utmost attention.
