The essay analyses the conceptual relationship between life and politics in Wilhelm von Humboldt’s unpolitisch view of public affairs, stressing the instrumental role of the second term compared to the first one. As a matter of fact, a nation represents - according to Humboldt - the place of both ethical and aesthetic life of citizens, which regulates itself morally, through the principle of reciprocity of negative social duties. Therefore a State, as a coercive machine, ought to intervene in the ethical life of citizens, in order to guarantee the external conditions of Bildung, i.e. freedom and diversity of situations, the only case, in which the negative social duty, that imposes respect for other citizens’ rights, is violated. In this way, Humboldt replaces the idea of State’s sovereignty with that of the individual’s.
