This paper presents a critical survey of a recent literature, that merges different traditions of industrial economics under an evolutionary perspective, to examine a particular field of production, the Complex Products and Systems (CoPS). The great potential of this literature is the capability to analyse the determinants and the possible patterns of innovation of these products together with the institutional and organisational context in which they are embedded. This is particularly useful to understand the possible evolution of a market, like the Italian one, that is now facing the challenge of complex projects, considering also that this literature comes from the analysis of the problematic and interesting experience of a developed context like the British market.
