During the last decades «identity» has become a sort of catchword both in the political and scholarly debate. The concept is probing analytically useful in the different sub-fields of political and sociological sciences. Given that global transformations are calling into question the very fundamentals of modern politics, the concept of identity can be considered a sort of «prism», say, a privileged point of view to be analytically used to grasp global transformations. The Eu experiment and the construction of the European identity can be considered as a sort of litmus test of the process of democratisation beyond the nation-state, and also of the re-conceiving of both political space and loyalties. The theoretical treatment of the subject matter has been performed on a dual path, dealing with both the Eu and world politics. The ultimate aim of this analytical review is to propose a sort of globalisation lexicon within which identity could be considered one of the keywords.
