In the well thought-out reflection on the causes, consequences and meaning of the Shoah which took place in France in the last few years it is of particular interest the debate regarding the criteria for a «just memory», that is a memory which should honour the victims and, at the same time, work against any form of totalitarism. Up to now this need was put forward by the survivors, but the passing of time imposes to find new keepers of this memory who do not have had direct experience of the catastrophe. It becomes then a priority that memory is not instrumentally subordinated to the ideological assumptions of «official memory». Working to counter the abuses of politics - and the attacks coming from negationists and revisionists - is a «critical» history which, by the mean of a very detailed reconstruction of the Shoah, seems to be able to take upon itself this task.
