Law and the Challenges of Change. The Teachings of Paolo Grossi ABSTRACT: Although history never actually repeats itself, it is essential to observe history nowadays if we are to achieve a better understanding of the change taking place in contemporary law: this is the tenet at the heart of a recent volume by Paolo Grossi, the illustrious mediaeval historian. Grossi focuses in particular on global legal dynamics and looks with special favour on the phenomenon of the multiplication of legal sources, which reduces the traditional monism of state legislation and contributes to recreating a more composite image of law, one that is closer to its social sources. Grossi’s approach is also compared here to those adopted by other authors who are more or less in favour of or against the legal changes now taking place.
