Health care professionals’ communication skills influence patient outcome, compliance and satisfaction. In the past years training has been increasingly provided to improve health care professionals’ communication, however only few studies assessed the effectiveness of the training. The aim of this study is to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of communication training, as perceived by health care professionals and patients in cardiac rehabilitation. In the Cardiovascular Institute of Camogli 24 health care professionals attended a course in order to improve their communication skills. The Health Care Communication Question-naire (HCCQ) was submitted to two groups of patients before and after the health care professional training programme. All participants completed a questionnaire about the quality, relevance and efficacy of the training. Qualitative observations were collected to evaluate the effect of training programme on the institute’s organization. Data showed that the patients perceived a significant improvement in the communication of health care professionals above all in listening and the communication skills. The majority of health care professionals considered the training to have been relevant and effective in improving their professional work. Moreover, the qualitative observations indicated that the training gave rise to organizational processes, which lead to an improvement of health care professional and patient communication as well as were effective communication within the health establishment.
