Adolescence today - Puberty, and its psychological response, adolescence, can be seen to both vary in time of onset and in duration, across the span of human history. Adolescence, as we currently understand it, appears to be a consequence of urban living following the changes brought about by the industrial revolution. Over the past fifty years rapid developments in technology have further influenced the course of adolescence, and the problems that may arise during it. Increasing access to immersive visual media has led to increasing levels of body image disorders and problematic and excessive use of technology. The increased access to information shapes identity and creates a plurality of identifications, thus increasing the adolescent struggle to find the authentic self.
