The aim of the study was to examine the perceptions of Italian and foreign residents of the railway station area in Reggio Emilia on their housing context and quality of life. The results showed both similarities and differences between the two groups. For all residents participating in the study, the quality of life was determined by the satisfaction with one’s area of residence and by the intention to move. Both social cohesion and perceived safety were moderate, and had different consequences for Italians and foreigners. These factors were associated with quality of life only for foreigners. The theoretical and practical implications of findings are discussed.

Keywords: Social cohesion, sense of safety, integration, quality of life, satisfaction for one’s residential area, immigration.
