Immigration, in Italy, was considered in the past a transitory occurrence, thus leading to provisional political measures. Immigration, in reality, is a structural component of Italian society. Today, an increasing number of immigrants’ children are born in Italy. They now represent a consistent part of the Italian school population. Schools were, and still are, one of the main instruments for social integration, encouraging social inclusion or selection. Current Italian research underlines that at present schools tend to strongly distinguish immigrant from Italian pupils, thus enhancing differential processes of achievement and choices of study. In most cases, students without Italian citizenship, albeit born in Italy, attain lower educational standards, have shorter school careers and usually go to workoriented schools. The Author as a consequence queries the Italian school system and questions it’s tendency to promote social integration and mobility, or to increase social disparities.
