This article investigates the historical development of sociology of law in Latvia and its importance in the contemporary Latvian legal system. The author places strong emphasis on the accomplishments of those scholars who have had the most significant impact on this field, with regard both to the period of Latvia’s independence and to the Soviet period (P. Stučka, V. Sinaiskis, K. Ducmanis, A. Krugļevskis). In characterising the development of present-day sociology of law in Latvia, the author highlights the most interesting theoretical concepts (such as the distinction between "genetic sociology of law" and "operative sociology of law" proposed by S. Osipova) and describes the role of sociology of law in contemporary Latvian legal culture.
