The paper aims at showing the coexistence of competitive and collaborative aspects within the practice of dialogue. Going back to the time before the example of Socrates (who is recognized somehow as the inventor of a ‘technique’ of comparison between interlocutors interested in the search for truth), the author intends to show that the ‘dialogue form’ has its roots in conflict and has implications not very reassuring in the dialectic of speech. The theme of the dialogue indicates the rise of a certain evolvability in the political path of civilization: starting from the destructive passions of Omeric heroes, to reach the commitment to perfect themselves through peaceful confrontation. Provided you do not forget that man’s nature is reflected in many different animals, and that the dialogue with wolves and hawks remains difficult.
