In rejecting - in the course of relevant controversies with Max Horkheimer and Walter Benjamin - both the naturalism of the materialistic social psychology proposed by the ‘Freudian Left’ (from Reich and Fromm to Horkheimer himself) and the theories of oneiric reflection and collective unconscious (as developed by Jung and Klages), Theodor Adorno comes to call the theoretical status of psychoanalysis as a particular scientific discipline into question and to discuss the social-historical constitution of its objectmatter. In the light of the examination provided by the Frankfurt authors, freudian theory appears as reflecting the crisis of the individual in late modernity and attempting to restore its persistence.
