The essay deals with the reactions of the Christian Democracy towards the wave of protest in Italy in 1977. It is based on a variety of sources: Dc’s documents and press, memoirs, parliamentary debates, US records. Firstly, the essay takes into consideration the Dc’s point of view on the causes and features of the new protest movement. Secondly, it looks into the party debate about its possible international links. Finally, the essay reconstructs the Christian Democratic leaders’ points of view on the relationship between the wave of protest and left-wing terrorism. According to the author, the majority of Christian Democrats interpreted the new cycle of protest mainly in terms of violence and public order, expressing also a very severe criticism towards the Pci.
