The article deals with the image of Italy widespread in the United States in 1977. It focuses on the perception of Italy prevalent in the overseas public debate, examined through a wide selection of US newspapers and periodical press. These images are also put in relation with some of the evaluations given by the American administration, the Cia, and the US Embassy in Rome. The paper also analyzes the overall image of Italian society elaborated overseas: lifestyle, mores, and the cultural scene of the peninsula.
