In 1946, the Slovene war crimes commission documented the crimes perpetrated during the Italian occupation. However, it was only in 1962 that Ivo Juvancˇicˇ’s book, Italijanski okupator v Ljubljani 1941-1943, was published. Until the 1980s and 1990s, when Tone Ferenc’s essays came out and the occupation was studied sistematically and in more detail, Juvancˇicˇ’s book remained the most comprehensive historical study of the Italian occupation of the province of Ljubljana. After the breakup of Yugoslavia Slovene historiography has treated the Italian occupation as a marginal theme, while the issue has been the object of much political attention. At the same time, the experience of the Italian occupation has been passed on primarily through the memories of those that were interned in Italian camps. The different perspective adopted by Slovene society - characterized by a growing concern for the victims rather than the heroes of the Resistance - demonstrates that Slovene collective memory is influenced by the same processes that shape the relationship between history and memory throughout Europe.
