The paper analyzes the first historiographical interpretations of political Catholicism in Italy after World War II. It focuses on the postwar period (1945-1960). The paper takes as point of departure the observation that the very expression "political Catholicism" ("cattolicesimo politico") did not denote a clear subject of historiographic analysis. Furthermore, the essay explores the close correlation between the above-mentioned studies and their political and cultural context, and the impulse they received from the contemporary flourishing of studies on the long-term history of the "catholic movement" ("movimento cattolico"). The essay then examines a broad range of positions in the works of scholars such as Jemolo, Chabod, Valiani, Spadolini, Scoppola, De Rosa, Alatri, Candeloro.

Keywords: Catholic movement, Christian Democratic Party, Catholic Action, Catholic State, Catholic Church and Fascism, Catholic Church and capitalist society
