The essay analyzes the main themes of the historiographical debate on Giuseppe Dossetti from the 1970s to the present. The analysis is based on two criteria: a chronological criterion, which follows the evolution over time of the debate on Dossetti’s activity; and a bibliographic criterion, which limits the survey to the literature focusing directly on Dossetti’s activity. From these two perspectives, it is possible to highlight the main findings, the overlapping themes, and the different conclusions of the historiographical debate. Furthermore, it is possible to shed light on the issues that still remain open: the vocation for politics and the religious choice, the relations between the State and the Church, the ideas on the crisis of modernity, the role of Catholics in the Italian political system after WWII, the ideal and historical foundation of the Italian democracy.

Keywords: Political Catholicism, Christian Democratic Party, religion and politics, crisis of modernity, Italian political system after WWII, Christian reformism
