The analysis is focused on the effects of European austerity policies on social rights in member states that share similar constitutional traditions in the field of welfare. Within this framework, the article then discusses the proclamation of the European Pillar of Social Rights and its inadequacy in sustaining social inclusion and cohesion. Finally, the article highlights the role of constitutional law at European and State levels for the construction of a ‘new’ European social space.
