This section develops a reflection on the exploratory sense and nature of the word ‘bioregion’. The project field and space of investigation is Milan, as a center of an extended system of places and landscapes, relations between production and consumption, waste and energy management. The bioregional perspective, which often is linked to ideological and academic positions, requires more pragmatic approaches based on concrete actions; in this case, we talk about actions aimed at improving agronomic and environmental qualities and more efficient and sustainable systems. The description and setting of a bioregional system are offered as a maybe improvable research perspective but useful in order to understand complex relationships for facing environmental and landscape issues and challenges of contemporary territories.

Keywords: Bioregion; territory and landscape design; transdisciplinarity
