The text aims at relating ‘fragile’ rural areas to landscape design practice, intended as a process of reinterpretation and transformation through which taking ‘care’ of places. To deepen this interaction, the necessary steps were: to identify the physical supporting elements that compose the rural areas - productive soil, irrigation system and paths - the same on which the design practices work; and to structure a reflection on the possible effects - laceration or procedural alteration - related to the weakening phenomena that make intervention necessary. By selecting of case studies identified in the European rural scenario, the intention is to outline three design strategies - of transformation, modification or regeneration - which relate to specific conditions of systemic imbalance.
