In recent decades many architectural firms operating in contexts of humanitarian crisis according to the Appropriate Technologies approach have been trying to develop alternative solutions to the emergency project: starting from a deep reflection on technology and materials, they are looking for efficient and sustainable solutions but also an aesthetic and a language capable of drawing lifeblood from the specificity of the places. By analyzing the design approach of ARCò - architecture & cooperation, Milan office active for more than ten years in contexts of war and poverty, we intend to reflect on the specific issues of emergency architecture: sustainability, formal research, language and communication are the fields in which an adequacy of technological and design responses is sought.
