Over the last forty years, Renzo Piano’s proposals have contributed decisively to the debate on urban development in Genoa to address the deindustrialization of the city. This article deals with a particular aspect of the projects designed by Piano focusing on the urban scale and waterfront of the city. In this framework, the only project entirely realized is the result of a long cultural, institutional and political reflection. Other proposals have failed to involve local actors and have been too ambitious or decontextualized with respect to the social and economic characteristics of the city. Nevertheless, these proposals have generated expectations and ideas about the city over time.
