On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of Welwyn Garden City (1920-2020), this thematic section focuses on the garden city, to be considered perhaps the most radical and relevant legacy of British ‘town planning and design’ and of the utopian tradition. The four essays that make up the section all start from a reconsideration of Ebenezer Howard’s initial principles, highlighting different aspects, to analyze the contemporary diffusion of the model in Europe and the United States, or unexpected aspects such as the relationship between urban planning and food production. The objective is an evaluation of the legacy of garden cities, between theory and practice, of city planning and design at the origin of many issues of the contemporary city.
