Nella sua conferenza di commiato davanti al Collège de France, Alain Supiot passa in rassegna il suo lavoro sulla trasformazione del lavoro nel XXI secolo, evidenziando il ruolo del diritto e delle istituzioni nell'affrontare le conseguenze della rivoluzione digitale e della crisi ambientale. A suo avviso, il fallimento morale, sociale e ambientale del neoliberismo richiede di riconsiderare la finzione giuridica del lavoro come merce e di ristabilire il vero «regime di lavoro umano» previsto dal preambolo della Costituzione dell'ILO, riconoscendo sia il significato che il contenuto del lavoro. Usa il caso della ricerca scientifica per illustrare la sua argomentazione.
