Drawing on unpublished documents, the author analyses a peculiar phase in the history of the Italian political system in the late 1950s. Between 1957 and 1958, some minor movements and parties within the secular and progressive political spectrum began a process of rapprochement. The Community Movement, led by Adriano Olivet-ti, Partito dei contadini d’Italia (Party of Italian Peasants) and the Sardinian Action Party took part in this process. The three political parties decided to form a coalition ahead of the 1958 elections. Comunità della cultura, degli operai e dei contadini d’Italia was based on a political programme designed to find a niche between the government’s centrist positions and the Italian Communist Party’s and was able to run an innovative electoral campaign. The author suggests that, despite its marginal electoral outcome, Comunità managed to become an active part of the second Government led by Fanfani, thanks also to Adriano Olivetti’s initiative, by outlining a development programme for Sou-thern Italy, and ultimately anticipated the political transition which would, later on, lead to the making of a centre-left government.
