It is with great pleasure that the *Rivista geografica italiana* hosts a multi-voiced discussion, in the form of a forum, on the novel by Wu Ming 1 published just over a year ago (15 October 2024); a novel whose literary geographies include various places studied and analysed by the Italian geography community.

This forum, therefore, unlike others previously published, does not stem from an academic volume or a debate already underway in a purely scientific context, but from a work of fiction that discusses various ‘exquisitely geographical’ issues – to use the expression employed by the forum’s lead author and editor, Francesco Visentin – centred on the Po Delta and, more generally, on the possible effects of climate change.

The forum features contributions from a number of geographers, including Francesco Visentin, Elisa Magnani, Stefano Piastra, Margherita Cisani and Luca Bonardi. These are colleagues who are passionate readers of the author (we know this is a common trait) and who, in this novel, have discovered – and shared with us – the many connections between the book’s content and the world of Geography practised ‘disciplinarily’ or ‘professionally’, including its problematic aspects.

Some of the contributions link the commentary to a personal connection with people, objects, places, landscapes and processes. For the editorial team—and, we believe, for our entire community—hosting this forum is also a way of remembering our colleague Federica Letizia Cavallo (1973–2023) with great affection and deep respect; she is mentioned in the book, and we can imagine that her work *Terre, acque, macchine. Geografie della bonifica in Italia tra Ottocento e Novecento (Diabasis, 2011) played a significant role in laying the scientific foundations on which this book is based. But the book also captures Federica’s kindness, curiosity and unpretentious non-conformism: we are pleased to know that we will always be able to find her in these pages.
