This essay is intended an initial contribution to the study of a topic that is still little known in Italian historiography, namely the nineteenthcentury cemetery reform in Italian states before their unity, focusing on the case of the mainland part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Based on correspondence between central government bodies and provincial administrations, the essay examines the difficulties involved in implementing a reform that was, by its very nature, widely resented and affected local political dynamics in every corner of the Kingdom. This allows for a fruitful comparison with other situations that faced the same problem during the 19th century.
