This article offers an interpretation of Rosanna Scatamacchia’s historical research, beginning with her posthumous book I numeri parlanti (The Talking Numbers). Her approach to economic history, necessarily intertwined with social and cultural history, is characterised by a focus on the historical actors within economic processes, the centrality of men and women situated in a historical context, and a keen sensitivity to the human aspect. Her research method combined philological accuracy and a passion for sources, a wideranging dialogue with historiography, a rigorous study of numbers without being confined to an exclusively quantitative approach, and engagement with literature. What emerges is a way of doing history that focuses on the human element rather than the exaltation of quantitative data, on complexity rather than the geometry of models, on contradictions rather than a presumed linearity in the unfolding of history, on the nonrational factors of the human experience rather than the rationality of theoretical laws.
Keywords: economic history, literature and history, epistemology of the human sciences, historical research method, historical actors, historiography.
