This article examines the theme of urban peripheries through a contemporary event: the demolition of the Vele di Scampia and the emergence of a narrative different from the longstanding association of the site with illegality, abandonment, and decay. A series of photographs depicting the Vele during the evacuation phase prompts reflection on the relationship between inhabitants and their built environment, while also foregrounding multiple perspectives on a marginal urban context. Rather than reproducing a hierarchical representation of the periphery as a space excluded from a dominant urban centrality, the article advances an alternative paradigm: a decentered analytical gaze that makes visible forms not (yet) integrated into processes of emancipation, yet nonetheless capable of breaking the silence of ‘disadvantaged neighborhoods’ and, potentially, of opening up discursive and spatial horizons within which every periphery may articulate its own voice.
Keywords: urban periphery; residential marginality; urban regeneration
