The objective of the article is to shed light on the debate between Erdmann and Feuerbach regarding the method and content of the history of modern philosophy. Although a limited number of scholars – most notably C. Cesa and E. Rambaldi – have acknowledged the significance of this debate, noone has explored it in depth. The intention is to do so by linking the debate to the broader framework of post--Hegelian thought, specifically at the inception of the politicization of philosophy and its themes – a dynamic that undergoes increasing radicalization in the late 1830s and early 1840s. By adopting this perspective, the author tries to relate the divergence between Feuerbach and Erdmann to their respective conceptualizations of the temporal nexus between past, present, and future. Whereas Feuerbach interprets the past through the lens of its potential for reactivation and actualization, Erdmann, by contrast, appears to underscore a diachronic progression that confines the past within a linear historical process culminating in Hegelian philosophy.

Keywords: «Jahrbücher für wissenschaftliche Kritik», post--Hegelian thought, History of Philosophy, politicization of philosophy, Entwicklung, diachronic and synchronic movement of thought.
