The article aims at highlighting ethnic inequalities in the Italian labour market by comparing immigrants and natives. The analysis is based on the Italian labour Force Survey (Istat) and takes into consideration the penalisations of immigrants in terms of a) unemployment risks and b) probabilities of being employed in manual jobs. The first part of the article shows that immigrants are penalised in comparison with natives as, age, education, family status and region being equal, they are more likely to be unemployed. Moreover, recent economic crisis increased the immigrants’ penalisation, over all for men. As far as the second part of the analysis is concerned, regressions showed that immigrants have more probabilities of getting manual jobs than natives, even if age, education and region of residence are controlled for. In particular, analysis stressed that the return of human capital are much higher for natives than for immigrants. The economic crisis made the conditions of immigrants even worst, over all for women, who are more and more segregated in housekeeping and elderly care activities for Italian households.
