Digital technologies orient the logic of production at global level. For this reason, the analysis of professions in information technology is useful to understand the major trends in the contemporary work organization. These workers have to cope with several tensions: with the use of specialized technologies and with various methods of scientific organization of the production processes, with a trend towards autonomy, cooperation and the enhancement of knowledge or, on the other hand, with new forms of surveillance and domination. The article explores their working conditions focusing the analysis on the opportunities for subjective affirmation and the challenges for the trade union representation. The analysis is based on the results of a qualitative survey with two focus groups and ten in-depth interviews with professionals in IT sectors in Italy.
